In the great
tradition of the road picture, Marcus Alexander Hart's The Oblivion
Society pits a group of geeky nuclear survivors against the elements
and each other as they attempt to fill the silence with borrowed
fortitude and pop culture references. But there is poignancy amid the
pastiche. Its clever, interesting characters are immediately endearing.
Sweet and brutal in equal measure, it is by turns a bright and bouncy
pop song, then as ruthlessly cruel as Celine Dion.
How will post-modern twenty-somethings fare when weaned of the west's electric teat? With loyalty and a sense of humor. Hart's prose is electric and probing, and his scenes stay with you long after you've put the book down. A far better comedy novel than that one Dave Barry wrote. Post-apocalyptic survival has never been so much fun!
