Sophia Roberts had been the dedicated wife and mother. Her entire life had completely revolved around caring for others and trying to make them happy. Now that both her children were in college, Sophia felt that she could finally spend more time with her husband and start to enjoy life.

Well, her prediction was partly true. Just as it seemed the children no longer needed her, her husband didn’t seem to want her either. It would seem that he preferred to spend his time with a girl almost the same age as his children.  To make matters worse, Sophia was fired from her job a week before her fiftieth birthday.

Then, the universe stepped in. Angry, confused, and without any direction, Sophia was called to a new beginning. She was challenged to let go of her emotional baggage and renew her creative spirit.

I absolutely adored Divine Diva. Having begun my own journey to uncover my own Diva power, I saw myself in Sophia. I felt her pain as my own and it helped me let go of some of my own baggage. Now, I feel empowered.

I have a new favorite fiction writer. I recently read Divine Diva by Catherine MacDonald and absolutely loved this empowering Chit Lit story. So when I came across another novel from Ms. MacDonald, Comstock Rose, I was eager to see how the author would do with historical fiction. I was not disappointed!

Comstock Rose is the story of Rose O’Conner. Rose was raised in a wealthy family who disowned her when she got pregnant by (and married) Ian O’Conner. Unfortunately, life with Ian was even worse than the scenario that Rose’s mother had told the young girl. Ian was an abusive drunk who gambled most of their money away.

Due to Ian’s loud mouth, gambling debts, and get rich quick schemes, the pair moved around a lot. This is how they came to Virginia City, a rough mining town. It was here that Rose’s life would take a very strange turn. A mining accident took Ian’s life. Deep in debt, with the worst kind of men, Rose needed to find a job in a town where the only positions for women were as ladies of the evening. As they say, where there’s a will there’s a way and Rose is a very strong woman.

The world of RVing is a unique and fascinating world of its own. There is a segment of the population that gives up permanent roots, buys a traveling home and hits the roads. The Road Queen is the story of four women who do just that.

Diana is a recent widow traveling in the large fancy RV her husband had bought just before he died. She meets Mary Ann, the Las Vegas waitress who is driving "The Love Machine," an older RV her husband gave her after
she found him in bed with another woman. The third woman of The Road Queens is Suzy who is running away from her past. Later in the book the fourth woman of the group joins them. Lily is not sure she ever wants to return to her couch potato of a husband.

The Road Queens chronicles the women's journey, a journey not only from place to place but one of personal growth and development. Each woman has her own secret and private demons that haunt her from the past that each must put to rest to be able to succeed in the future. As the four very different women become friends they learn to accept themselves as women and as people.

Author Catherine MacDonald is also known as the RV Lady, the host of a TV and radio talk show about the RV lifestyle. A former teacher, she and her husband now own an RV sales, parts and service center. She is able to vividly introduce the reader into the everyday life of the people who travel from place to place in their own homes. By the end of the book the reader is likely to want to put a for sale sign on his house, buy a deluxe home on wheel and join the fun.

Melinda Powell’s grandmother summer it all up when she told her that her home was always going to be a part of her, regardless if she moved away. Her past would always play an important part to her life as slowly but surely, she would become more aware of this basic truth.

Things seem to be heading that way after Melinda’s father suddenly passed away and she left her picture perfect life in Boston to help her mother cope with the loss. As her father served as her first hero, she was not prepared to learn that he had a serious weakness for gambling and women which resulted in almost destroying her mother. Surrounded by her family and former high school love, she begins to realize the importance of family and the real meaning of life.

This was a beautiful book with a multi-faceted story regarding love, family, and self-realization.    The characters could have been real people which I found as the reader could not help but become close to. The romance between Melinda and her former childhood love was sweet and tenderly told. The plot moved along at a nice pace and the drama continuously kept me at the edge of my seat. This book touched the soul and as a result, was a very fulfilling read. Ms. MacDonald has a wonderful knack at storytelling and I look forward to seeing her next book.
