Learn from professionals. Authors can be involved actively or passively. These organizations will give as much as you are willing to give. As an example, AC founder Carolyn Howard-Johnson contributes sporadically to "Span Connection," SPAN's monthly print newsletter. That's networking! That's outreach!

Also, many of these organizations offer reciprocal discounts--join one and get the second for a lesser price.

The Military Writers Society of America is an association of more than five-hundred authors, poets, and artists, drawn together by the common bond of military service or those who write with a military focus. www.militarywriters.com  Here are author events from that organization that may interest you (and an example of one of the perks offered to authors--the calendar that is).
